Bless the LORD oh my soul, oh my soul, worship his holy name.
In Christianity’s struggle to be united, we have lost much of our holy language. We no longer sing songs for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three in one and blessed Trinity. Contemporary worship is inspired by inclusion, seeks to not offend, and desires to always relate. The popular worship songs of today echo our secular pop songs – 4 chords, 1-5-6-4 progression, and predictable rhythm that gives the bass player yawning fits. (Hi, yes, still awake, barely)
That’s enough to make my point. I have been riding the contemporary worship wave for a decade and a half, since I was saved. The songs I worshipped to when I was 15 – 16 still ring true, but now more so on a personal level than a “everyone needs to hear this song it will change your life” level. Those ‘old’ songs invoke particular, intimate thoughts and emotions that I miss when I sing the new stuff today. What has changed? Nothing and everything, but mostly me.
When my walk with God was just starting out, everything was new. I had never heard Open the Eyes of My Heart or I Could Sing of Your Love Forever. These were new revelations, new conversations to have with the Father. I remember nights at the Faith, worshipping in youth group and God would meet us right there with all of his glory. And so we worshipped Him in all of his glory, as He is, was and will be. An He blessed it. As I kept walking with Him, He blessed my worship, and the worship of those around me, however, when I fell away or came to worship indifferent, He did not bless.
